Well, you can, but you don't need to set a filter in the grid - you can just click the column header that you want to search in (to sort it) and then type the first few letters of what you're looking for and the grid will scroll down to it as you type. To me, that seems as fast as clicking in an edit box and typing a few letters there. Maybe faster - because if you are typing in the grid and you see what you're looking for a few rows down, you could just arrow key down to it and then hit enter. If you're in an edit box, you'd have to either keep typing until the grid is down to just the one entry you're looking for, or use the mouse. One thing I do like about your suggestion though is that non-matching rows would drop away as you type, giving you less too look at...
